JacksonjoinedhisbrothersonasupportingtourfortheJacksons'Victory

producedbyNewJackSwingcreatorTeddyRiley,thealbumfeatured
material("HealtheWorld,""WhoIsIt")thatrecalledhisworkwithQuincy
Jones,withwhomhehadpartedwaysshortlyafterBad.Riley,however,
toughenedandupdatedJackson'ssound,strippingoffsomeofthesmooth
studioglossofhispreviousworks.Withthe$1.2millionvideoforthesingle
"BlackorWhite,"JacksondemandedthatMTVandBETannouncehimas"the
KingofPop"(afacthewouldlaterdenyinalivetelevisedinterviewwith

preparedforaspectacularworldtour.Alsoin1992,heembarkedonafive-

galaforPresidentBillClinton;healsoreached91millionviewersinhishalf-
timeperformanceatSuperBowlXXVII,themostwidelyviewed(and,many
said,boring)entertainmenteventinTVhistory.Heannouncedthestartofa

L.A.childrenfollowingthatcity'sriots.InaFebruaryTVinterviewwithaless
thanincisiveOprahWinfrey,herevealedthathesufferedfromvitiglio,a
diseasehemaintaineddiscoloredhisskin,andthathewasavictimofabuse
atthehandsofhisfather,Joseph.Hetriedtodispelsuchlong-standing
tabloidrumorsastheonethatheoncetriedtobuythebonesofthe
ElephandManorhadsleptinahyperbaricchamber.Healsosaidthathewas
datingmovieactressandmodelBrookeShields,whohadbeenacompanion
duringtheThrillerperiod.Theinterviewwasoneofthemost-watched
televisionprogramsinhistory.InMarchheformedMichaelJackson
ProductionsInc.,anindependentfilmcompanythatwouldgiveashareofits
profitstotheHealtheWorldFoundation.InJunehedebutedhisMJJ/Epic
recordlabel,releasingtheFreeWillysoundtrack.

ButscandaleruptedonAugust17whenaBeverlyHillspsychiatrist
approachedtheLAPDaftera13-year-oldpatientclaimedthatJacksonhad
fondledhim.Later,specificchargesbroughtbytheboy'sfatherclaimedthat
Jacksonhadsexuallyabusedtheboyathishouseearlierintheyear.After
thefatherobtainedarulingtodenyJacksoncontactwiththeson,thepolice
raidedNeverland,seizingvideotapesandotherpossibleevidence(nothing
incriminatingturnedup).WhiletravelingtoBangkokfortheDangeroustour,
Jacksondeniedthecharges,hissecurityconsultantmaintainingthatthe
boy'sfatherhadattemptedtoextort$20milliontostartaproduction

InSeptember,Jackson'ssisterLaToyareportedthatheusedtospendthe
nightwithyoungboysinhisroom,andtwoformeremployees,who

OnJanuary25,1994,lawyersforJacksonandtheallegedvictimannounced
aprivatesettlementfortheboy'scase,despitethefactthatJackson
resolutelycontinuedtodenywrongdoing.Whiletermswerenotdisclosed,
estimatesofJackson'spaymentreachedashighas$26million.Oneday
earlier,followingacriminalinvestigationintoJackson'sclaimsthattheboy's
fatherwaspartofanextortionplotagainsthim,theD.A.declinedtofile

JacksonlatermarriedDebbieRowe,anursehe'dmetintheearly1980swhen
undergoingtreatmentforvitiglio.Aboy,Prince,andagirl,Paris,resulted
fromtheunion.

organizedabenefitconcertforSeptember11victimsatWashington,D.C.'s
RFKStadium.ThatOctobersawthereleaseofInvincible(NumberOne),
featuringthesingles"Butterflies"(Number14,2001),"YouRockMyWorld"
(NumberTen,2001),and"Cry."Thealbumsoldclosetoeightmillioncopies
worldwide,butitsmakeronceagainfoundhimselfembroiledincontroversy
whenJacksondecidednottorenewhiscontractwithSony.Thecorporation's
leader,TommyMottola,canceledallpromotionaleffortsforInvinciblein
2002.JacksonrespondedbypubliclybrandingMottolaracistand"adevil."
